“The Secretariat of the Political Bureau praised the presentation of the candidacy of the militant João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço for president of the MPLA, hoping that others will follow his example, meeting all the requirements in terms of the methodological norms of the conclave and the electoral regulations of the MPLA”, reads up in the press release of this executive organ of the party.
The members of the Political Bureau secretariat considered that the process of candidacies for the singular bodies, within the scope of the VIII Ordinary Congress of the MPLA, “comes to reinforce the sense of internal democratization in the Party”.
It should be noted that the candidacy of the current MPLA president, João Lourenço, for the party’s leadership, was presented on Wednesday, 27, at the party’s headquarters, by the member of the MPLA Political Bureau, Pedro Neto, in his capacity as agent.
The ceremony was presided over by MPLA vice president, Luísa Damião, who coordinates the candidacy subcommittee of the national preparatory commission for the VIII Ordinary Congress of the MPLA, which takes place between 9 and 11 December.
The party president is, for now, the only candidacy presented to his own succession, at a time when MPLA militant António Venâncio, who expressed his intention to run for the position, continues to say that he has “huge barriers” in the collection of signatures in the provinces to present to the candidacy committee.
António Francisco Venâncio, MPLA activist for 48 years, denounced Domingo, 24, for having “blocked” the process of collecting signatures for his candidacy by individuals he considered “anti-democrats”.
“There is a lot of inexplicable silence about all that we are seeing at the party level”, he says, stressing that “multiple candidacies would also constitute an unprecedented feat” in the MPLA, resulting in a reinforcement of internal democracy.
Without problems, as expected, João Lourenço’s candidacy process took place.
“It was a very thorough job. It is true that we exceeded the requirements, since 100 signatures per province were enough. But this proves well the work that was developed to collect the subscriptions in favor of our candidate’s candidacy”, pointed out Pedro Neto, representative of the MPLA president.
According to Pedro Neto, they collected a “very large” number of subscriptions – more than 20,000 – and he believes that the same will happen in the election process, since President João Lourenço has “knowledge, militancy and, above all, an inclusive project to improve conditions in the country”.
It should be noted that the process of submitting candidacies for the positions of president, vice president, secretary general and first provincial secretaries of the MPLA started on Wednesday, 20th of this month and ends on 06 November.
